2-29-2012 Leapday WW

While hiking on a local trail, I found this stump with one rock perched on it. I added a second rock and went on my way. Two weeks later while passing the same way, I found it like this. I wonder if who added the third rock is the original person who perched the first or someone new? It is sort of like having a conversation with people unseen. I will probably hike past there again next week and will see if anything has changed.

Too bad the last person put on such a small rock. I guess you could add one under it next time.

Pretty cool, you’ll have to keep us updated to any changes.

I’ve seen very few mini-cairns before, but it looks like the last person putting a stone on top was limited to placing a fairly small stone; otherwise the pile might have fallen over.

What a wonderful find! Your description of the conversation was so appropriate – it would be wonderful to know who started it and who continued…

Great post, Will! Perhaps you can find a really wide flat stone to balance on top?

But you didn’t add another rock? So tempting!!

You know that is a good point. I guess I figured my rock was already there, but adding another would be more of a back and forth. If I find it still there, I will add another, perhaps sneaking one in under the small top one.

Very artistic! Are those Garry oaks in the background? I grew up on the fringes of the great oak prairie of southwest Washington. Or what was left of it.

I believe they are Garry Oaks although I am not positive. Unfortunately there are a lot of them in Southern Oregon and we are seeing many suddenly die off.

I wonder how high the rock pile will get over time. I think you need to sneek a bigger one under the top one too. We often see them on the sides of the road stacked on top of guide posts.

Maybe the one who did this thing as a passion in forming rocks! But this is a cool creative idea! Thanks for sharing this photo!
