Corn Syrup – The Real Truth

by updated 2012/12/16

No High Fructose Corn SyrupI know I have written about the nastiness of high fructose corn syrup a few times.  It is even part of the reason I think the number two thing you can do to improve your health, (after stopping smoking), is to stop drinking soda.  Some people take a lighter approach to this advice with YouTube spoofs of the high fructose corn syrup industry’s attempts to make their syrup look harmless.  You may have seen one of the industry’s ads like the first video below.  But please, also take a look at the other two videos. They shed some light, and some humor, on just what the manufacturers of HFCS have been tying to accomplish with their ads.

When I was in South East Asia I noticed my favorite soda (Mountain Dew) was made with sugar – not corn syrup. It isn’t like that makes it healthy but at least it avoids corn syrup. The evidence against drinking soda seems pretty strong – though I still do it more than I should :-(

Decreasing your intake of empty calories is definitely wise. As is eating plenty of vegetables (the other thing I try to focus on). And exercising is important, especially for those of us that sit around behind a desk every day.

Mountain Dew has a ton of caffeine too, I think. Interestingly it is not just the corn syrup that causes weight gain and metabolic syndrome. Research is finding that DIET sodas are guilty as well.
