Deceptive PR..or Good Advice?

by Will on October 8, 2008

I recently saw news stories touting a campaign to get people to focus on maintaining a “healthy weight” and forgoing fad dieting.  This message has been around for years, but the stories seemed to indicate that this campaign was bigger and better funded than in the past.  I know it doesn’t lessen the validity of the message, but imagine my surprise when I came upon the press release that prompted those news stories.  It turns out that the folks behind the “campaign” are the same folks that brought us the white mustache advertisements!

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The last decade can be defined
by the ups and downs of different fad diets -- which seem to go in and out
of fashion like shoulder pads and hemlines. Yet, long-term success has been
slim. Two out of three Americans -- including 27 percent of Pennsylvania
residents -- remain overweight or obese.

A new campaign crossing the country, the Campaign for Healthy Weight,
is rallying Americans behind the healthy weight cause and urging people to
think more about their "health" instead of simply a number on the scale.
Studies indicate that small, specific changes in physical activity and
calorie intake can make a big difference. And, people who maintain a
healthy weight are less likely to be at risk for weight-related health
conditions, such as heart disease. The Campaign will make its stop in
Harrisburg on October 5, to urge local residents to change their "diet"
mindset and elect a new attitude.

You can read more from the milk people and theThe Milk Processor Education Program here. The message of recognizing your healthy weight and avoiding fad diets is a good one. But is drinking lots of cow’s milk really a valid part of the message?

Very interesting point, I would love to see the studies on the benefits of drinking milk, my wife can’t handle milk for various reasons, and one of my daughters is lactose intolerant.

hi Will, I support any group that encourages people to achieve and then maintain healthy weight, which one should do through eaing right and excercising, not fad diets. But I don’t understand the part about “drinking milk”, and I didn’t see any proof behind the claims that it helps maintain a healthy weight. The funny thing is the study is about “low fat or fat free milk”, but then they just say that you should drink milk (notice the “low fat or fat free” is gone)… I say if you want to loose weight or keep your weight down, make most of your drinking a zero calorie beverage that’s been around forever (it’s called water). ~ Steve

I know a lot of people have trouble with milk. I drink some, but it has to be lactose free, and organic. Conventional milk has too big a possibility of containing hormones and antibiotics. Plus so many of the milk cows are so unhealthy. I read somewhere that there is often some blood in milk from unhealthy cows. And yes Steve, the claim of it helping to maintain a healthy weight seems dubious at best. But the facts can be manipulated and interpreted to say just about anything you want.
