Save Your Eyes – Lose Your Kidneys

by Will

Sometimes, when indulging my habit of quickly scanning the hundreds of news articles that stream through my Google Reader each week I do a big double take. This week that happened ten fold! First I saw this article: Cancer drug could save eyesight of tens of thousands .  Then a few entries later I saw:  Cancer drug can cause kidney damage.  You can read the articles for the full stories, but first answer the following question.  Are the articles talking about the same cancer drug?  I bet you get it right on the first try.  This stuff can drive you batty eh?

hi Will,
Hopefully researchers can tweak the dosage or modify the formula and achieve the benefit without the “side effects” (but who needs both kidneys anyways?). That said, I think a rule in medicine is probably that the best case is that something can help 99.9% of people, but it seems there is always some side effect or risk that will effect someone, at least, it seems there is always “fine print”.
I know the TV drug commercials always crack me up when you see happy, smiling people but if you listen to the announcer, it’s potentially a different story… may cause A, B, or C, or if you have XYZ, may cause D, E, or F, etc, etc, etc…

Will no doubt drugs have side effects. When my cousin was going under chemo few years ago, you should see the list of side effects, and one of them was other type of cancer, yes you clean up one and potentially you could get another one. Thanks for sharing the links, I will check it out. Anna :)

Thanks for those links. Yes all drugs have side effects. It is just not possible to put a chemical in the body and not get a reaction. Its just at times, the body is better able to cope with it and at other times not. Sometimes we just have to choose between the lesser of the 2 evils. Thanks for the links anyway.

If it will probably save your eyes or cure your cancer, and MAYBE damage your kidneys, I suppose that the choice is not that hard.
