Viagra Can Cause Deafness

by Will on October 19, 2007

Eh?? What’s that you said?? This story is sure to draw a lot of attention, but it is just another example of why whenever you take a medication, I think you should take the smallest effective dose you can. With Viagra, and other similar drugs, the number of cases of sudden hearing loss is very small, so for men who use it the benefits probably outweigh the risks. In any case, there are probably lots of men who would trade hearing for sex!

I wrote an post on another web site a long time ago about using the smallest possible dose of an drug, prescription or over the counter. It was in response to an article written by a doctor who was trying to explain why his patients are not willing to try a smaller dosage first. Something along the lines of they want complete relief, immediately, and don’t care to see if a smaller dosage would work. If I can find it in my computer filing system, I’ll put it up here.

I knew that Viagra and sudden hearing loss would get a lot of attention. Anna just referred to it in a comment on another post. Take a look at her comment #11 on this post for a great description of why we need to be careful when we “oil our hinges” with prescription or over-the-counter medication.

Thanks Will for the link. I guess I was just replying to the other post and left all other good posts for other time to read. What a coincidence?
BTW me and my husband were home today, and kept joking all day about it….sometimes you have to or cannot resist, lol. Anna :)

Most people avoid taking a smaller dose because they are looking for the result and don’t trust the smaller dose to produce the reaction they want. It would be safer but people these days aren’t worried about what is “safe.” Viagra exists to give a person immediate satisfaction. I personally would never use a product that can cause hearing loss.
