Sunday Search of the Week 10-26-2008

by Will on October 26, 2008

This week, I did not get any real funny or odd searches.  Rather than use one of the saved search terms from the past, I decided to post the most popular search used to find my site this week.

“melamine in milk”

I am surprised that with all the thousands, maybe millions of sites with info on this scandal, that this site turns up on the first or second page of Google results.  Cool.

hi Will,
Wow… I’m not just surprised, I’m blown away. I just checked on google and you’re still on page two. I am amazed. Did you try to do this?

PS. I had to chuckle when I read your post about China setting an “acceptable” level of melamine in milk. I agree with you… ZERO!

Hi Steve. I don’t ever do anything specific for SEO, but Google seems to love me for some unknown reason. For example I just searched for “Ethical Food”, a pretty common term these days. The search returned 56,000 results and this site was the 9th result. Go figure!

Several times people I know have sent me email telling me that this site not only turns up on the first page of search results, but sometimes the first or second entry. I don’t think it really has any big benefit, though. With the exception of last July, this site has consistently gotten 5 to 9 thousand visits per month for quite a while. If turning up on the first page of Google had any great benefit, I would have thought the visits would trend up over time more than they do. What does occasionally bump up traffic is when a post gets Stumbled. In July, I had 22,000 visits because two posts were submitted to Stumble. So… anyone that likes any of my posts, feel free to Stumble. That kind of traffic spike is nothing to ignore!
