Study Claims Green Lifestyle Changes Are Difficult

by

Energy Saving

A survey conducted this year in Great Britain claims that many people there think making green lifestyle changes are too much effort. Approximately 25% of people polled believe that it takes too much work to make environmentally friendly changes to their lifestyle and don’t believe their own lifestyle contributes to environmental problems.

This is claimed by the study’s authors even though the survey showed that 71% had recently increased their recycling efforts, and almost 75% use compact fluorescent bulbs in their home, (an increase from 31% 5 years ago). In addition, 39% say they are using their cars less. Over 1/2 of the respondents said they would like to cut their use of automobiles, but felt they had no alternatives for reducing their driving.

Sometimes I think these surveys are summarized to show things that make a good headline. In the above survey, I think the main message is something other than changes being too difficult. It is great that such high percentages of people are thinking about changes they can make. Small changes do make a difference when adopted by millions of people. Many of the changes encouraged by those of us thinking about these issues have personal benefits beyond a contribution to the common good and can save money or make your life simpler and less stressful.

Many people are leading greener lifestyles simply because they feel better doing it. Just thinking about changes you can make can lead to a more positive mental outlook. Add in some healthy diet changes, and what’s not to like?

Yes, not getting carried away is important, but a better problem to have than how to get started!

I get quite a few direct contact questions about how to start making healthy life style changes. I get the feeling that people think it can be overwhelming at the start. I am thinking about starting a series detailing my experience and offering guidance and suggestions for making those initial small steps towards healthy changes to your lifestyle. Look for it to start soon.

I like your site. I have a one or two non-technical suggestions that might help it take off. I also have a couple of specific questions about my site that others have been a bit puzzled by. I would love to exchange an email or two. If this is OK, contact me directly through my site. The contact form sends directly to my inbox.

Thanks for your comment!

Hey, I really liked that post. I was fortunate enough to recognize healthy living style about 12 years ago, I think once I went on my own, I wanted to live my life right way, so I educated myself in many things, and attended workshops and programs, and that helped a lot. On the end everyone of us need ‘will’ to do it, otherwise, I probably be eating tons of butter every day lol. Anna 🙂
Keep up the good work, lots of good stuff on your blog.

Hi Anna! Thanks for the compliment! Twelve years is some real experience. I hope I can keep this site interesting enough to entice you to contribute your experiences to everyone. Feel free to comment or contact me directly with any feedback, suggestions etc.

I actually get more email questions than comments on my posts, and those emails have a common theme relating to how hard it is to start the healthy lifestyle changes. I plan to do a series of posts taking little pieces of topics relating to that with the hope that people will feel they can be successful long term like yourself.

By the way… I really like your site. I took a look around a quickly realized there was a lot there I wanted to read. Bookmarked and I will see you there, I am sure.

I saw your husband is a hockey player. I guess that is common in your “neck of the woods”, but it caught my eye since I live in Oregon. I still play weekly even at my advancing age! Greatest game on earth, not just ice!

Hi Will,

Great post! It is funny how, just looking at the study closely totally makes the title seem silly. Seems like people ARE choosing to make green changes, just small ones. Still, maybe people think that adopting a greener lifestyle is too hard, yet are willing to make small changes that they don’t even consider it a lifestyle change.

Recycling and going green can be challenging at first, but once you learn the basic steps, your knowledge expands. Choosing to use recyclable water bottles rather than plastic bottles, using less plastic in your lunch and recycling household products such as detergent and shampoo bottles are ways to cut costs when shopping and being away from home.
