Thanks for all the guesses everyone. It is actually lichen growing on the bark of a Douglas Fir tree on one of my hikes or camping trips. I remember when I took it I thought it was quite beautiful but the shot turned out more creepy than I remember it.

It was very difficult to guess it from just looking at picture, again an amazing picture.
