Smart Crows in the News? Monday Search

by updated 2010/11/29

I know this is not Sunday, but I saw today an inundation of people arriving here with many different variations of a search looking for how smart crows are.  Normally something like that would have 2 or 3 people a week finding my post on those crows at the traffic light.  But today I quickly added up over 70 people finding that post.  I did a search myself for anything in the news that would have caused this as I am very interested in reading about it.  But I can’t find anything.  Has anyone seen a news story that might have caused people to all of a sudden start searching for smart crows?

Not in this neck of the woods.
BTW I fixed my problem via WP.org help forum. It was a cache problem as someone else had exactly the same problem. Sometimes changes were taking several hours. I had previously fiddled with the cache settings bad man that I am

Ah yes the famous cache problem. Not uncommon at all. I always shudder when I see you have posted a Toilet of the Week. I guess I have been in too many public men’s rooms or something. But I have to say I got a little chuckle from your latest.

Will,
I have no idea why or if there is a new burst of interest in “smart crows” but I did a google search for “smart crows” and your post on the traffic light is number two!
More interesting though is the fact that just last week I was talking with someone and mentioned your post about crows seeming to understand traffic lights. It is one of the most memorable posts you have written, to my mind, though there are several. :)

PS. We get a LOT of crows here in Santa Barbara when the walnuts are ready in the early fall. They pick them up, fly up on light poles or power poles, and then drop the walnuts to crack them open so they can eat the nut. So every year I am reminded of how smart crows are (and noisy).

Hi Steve – You are too kind! That reminds me of a funny story about some crows and a mystery here at our house a couple months ago. Actually they were ravens, I think. I’ll do a post explaining what happened.

A few weeks ago my daughter and I watched this on pbs:

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/a-murder-of-crows/introduction/5838/

The one thing that really struck us was a part about how crows appear to mourn for other crows that die. Overall it’s amazing how differently we look at crows now after watching this.

Thanks Susan! I bet that is it. I looked back through the stats and that post has been getting quite a bit of traffic for at least the past week. I’ll have to keep an eye out for a re-broadcast.

I saw that PBS crow show, too. Very interesting, and the crows there seemed to be able to read the traffic lights, too. Perhaps some popular blog or tweet mentioned crows as a result of that show, and you’re getting some of the benefits?

Hi Binky – Now that you say there was something about traffic lights in the show I REALLY want to see it.

You know when I read your reply to my comment on your “Can’t Imagine That” Wombania post, I had to Google “wine gums”. There may be no hope for me! ;-)

Sorry, I tend to forget that Americans are wine gum deprived. Wine gums are mostly a British Commonwealth country thing.

The crows apparently used the traffic lights to know when it was safe to use the roadway for cracking nuts to eat.
